Hi there, first let me start by saying sorry if I have posted this in
the wrong group. In addition to that I do not fully understand or
speak web lingo, so please speak to me as I am an 8 year old!
Here is as much information as I can give knowing the small amount I do
about networking.
I work for a small company and we have a network of 5 computers plus
our server. Our server plus 2 computers run Windows 2000 Pro, 2 run
Windows XP, and one runs Windows 98 (eek!).
My first order of business is to try and understand "permissions",
without having to take all of your time... is there any good links for
people like me (who don't understand much of what I am talking about)
that clearly state how to work with and define permissions?
Second; I know that networking with a machine running 98 is not the
easiest thing to do. I am trying to restrict that specific machine
from running the Internet, which is hard enough in itself, and from
having access to everything on the server, with the exception of a few
folders that I would like to choose (possibly password protected? OR
permission restricted?) Ideally, for backing up purposes, I'd like to
be able to keep that computer connected to the network.
So... all in all, my areas of trouble are: permissions and understand
them (without having to take a 5 day course), disabling the Internet on
a machine running 98, and password protecting or permission restricting
folders on the 98 machine.
Links are very helpful as long as I can understand them...
I hope this all makes sense, and thank you in advance for taking the
time to read and hopefully help me!!
feel free to ask any questions, I will answer the best I can.
