Network performance

Anyone experiencing slow network performance when copying to server or
another pc in the network?

We have a large image library (photos). Every time we download from our
camera, we copy all files from our local Vista pc to 2 different locations:
backup folder on our Win2K Adv server and another workstation running Win2k,
both SP4.

The problem is that it takes AGES to copy due to low network speed. Copying
50 images of 4MB each takes 5-7 minutes or even more! between the other
computers running Win2K and XP we do not experience this problem.

Any ideas?

Lots of people have slow network performance issues with Vista. There is
a hotfix for it.

The copy process may stop responding when you try to copy files from a
server on a network to a Windows Vista-based computer:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/931770/en-us

You need to contact MS for the hotfix, which is free. Since you're not
in the US (where I am), my giving you phone numbers will be useless but
the above link will have the right ones for you. There is also an online
hotfix request form but I don't know if it is applicable to your
country. Here is the link anyway:

Submit an online request to obtain a Microsoft hotfix

I found a solution here
http://www.ads-links.com/index.php/how-to-fix-windows-vista-slow-network-transfer.html.

I have a Dell Dimensions E520 and runs McAfee. Disabling real time
protection did the trick. Obviously McAfee sw is really slowing down the
copying as it scannes every file leaving the 'puter . So this applied
for me at least.

Thanks for posting back with your solution. McAfee is pretty dreadful
and causes all sorts of problems. I can recommend NOD32, Kaspersky, or
even Avast if you want a free solution. I would get rid of McAfee in any
case.

I would concur. McAfee is really dire, can cause huge performance issues
for some people.
