I have 4 computers in a home networked. 1-3 are decktops hard wired to
Lynksys wireless G router and a 4 is laptop using wireless. All 4 computers
are using Windows XP Pro and are assigned to the same workgroup. My problem
is that Computer 1 can access computers 2-4 through my computer network and
can also be accessed through remote desktop. Computers 2-4 cannot connect to
Computer 1.
My problem started with Computer 2. Got a corrupted config/system file and
had to reinstall Windows. I had a similar problem with Computer 2. It’s my
backup computer and my scheduled backups would not start. I search this forum
and a MVP gave some one else with similar problems directions to go to the
properties on my Local Area Connection and enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Then
restart the Computer Browser Service. Worked great! All my backups went fine.
Then I started have problems with Computer 3-4 getting connected to the
internet and the using remote desktop from Computer 4 (Wireless) to Computer
3. So…repeated the above suggestion to Computers 3-4 and they are now again
part of the network working like they use to work. Now I can’t get Computer 1
to be recognized by Computers 3-4 with the above statement as a reason.
I have since re-created the LAN connection on Computer 1 I have set the
NetBIOS with the same settings. I have checked all computer names (which
haven’t changed for a couple of years), and have the same WORKGROUP name. I
have established my router is working properly in Device Manager (also all
the other computers are doing great on the router) and that all my pertinent
files are marked as shared. I am all out of ideas. Please suggestions are
welcomed.
