Ok here's one for you guys hope this helps, after installing SP2 on a xp pro
I lost connection to my server 98se. I have 3 xp's and 3 98se machines on my
network and could not see the 98 machines. I tried everything changing the
node type, changing the workgroup, checking all netbios settings, even
reinstalled all settings in the network stack. After calling Microsoft and
spending 8 hours on the phone with no avail, I called a colleague and he
suggested changeing the network card in the one machine that had the problem.
Also I could get to the problem from the 98's just not to the shared folder
from the XP to 98! Oh ya I could get to it in Safe mode??? Well guess SP2
corrupted something on the NIC seeing how layer4-7 does not load in Safe
mode, well that was it fellas, I still cannot believe microsoft did not pick
up on that. Well hope this helps, when in doubt change it out!

Brent,

Check for a browser conflict between the WinXP computers and the Win98
computers. I"m not talking about Internet Explorer here. The browser is the
program that allows any computer to see any other computer on the LAN. The
browsers for WinXP (WinNT/2K/XP) and Win98 (Win95/98/ME) don't work well
together on the same LAN.

On a six computer LAN, you should have only two browser computers - a master and
a backup. Choose two computers that are consistently online (either two Win 98
or two Win XP - don't mix the OSs), and designate them the browsers.

Make sure the browser service is running on the browser computers. If the
browsers are the Win XP computers, go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools -
Services. Verify that the Computer Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper,
services both show with Status = Started. Disable the browser on the other four
computers. On the Win XP computers, Stop then Disable the browser service. On
the Win 98 computer(s), stop the Browse Master:

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, power all computers off to reset
the browser settings on each. Then power the browser computers on, and finally
the other computers on.

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers (I'm not talking about
Internet Explorer here) you have in your domain / workgroup, at any time.

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers list the same master
browser.
For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

I will double check it, but it's not a node issue that I am sure of. I have
tried all types by forcing reg key over to 1 thru 4. Also My problem is
back after replacing the NIC inside problem computer my mapped drive came
back on, after a day when it was turned back on it did not? I can ping by
name and ip address both ways, also I can map to the problem from the 98
machine over to the problem one, it is not a firewall issue, check both
router and software, I have removed and reinstalled SP2 but no avail, HELP???

Brent,

When you look at the browser situation, please make sure you resolve the Node
Type issue FIRST. Node type 2 (P-Node) ("Peer-Peer") uses WINS for name
resolution; if you don't have a WINS server, then you will complicate diagnosis
of any other problems.

The browser issue is lots of fun to diagnose. Depending upon when any computer
is rebooted (and not immediately either), the symptoms will change. Mix Windows
9x (95/98/ME) and Windows NT/2K/XP browsers, and you will have chaos.
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/win95/w95brows.mspx>
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

Resolve the Node Type and Browser issues first, then post back if you still have
problems. Provide ipconfig information for each computer, and we can diagnose
if necessary.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.
