Network not accessible

I am trying to set up a home network to share files and
printers. I only have dial-up internet, so I am not
using it for that at this time. I have a US Robotics
8054 wireless router. My desktop computer is connected
to the router via ethernet and the laptop is connected
via an onboard wireless card. After spending hours on
the phone with US Robotics, each computer is
communicating with the router, but not with each other.
USR could not help me any further.

I get a message on my desktop that says: "laptop not
accessible You might not have permission to use this
network resouce."

On the laptop I get a message that says: "workgroup not
accessible You might not have permission to use this
network resouce."

I have turned on sharing on both computers and have
followed all troubleshooting messages in both computers
and Microsoft's website. I have not been able to figure
it out.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Right click on "my computer" Select properties
Select tab "computer name" and change the network name of the computer
Reboot then go back and change the name back again Then you should see a message saying "welcome to ......" whatever your network is called

Couple of rules
1. All ther machines in a workgroup must have the same workgroup name (obvious really)
2. Machines must be connected to the network when they are named
3. Users need an identical account on each workstation to access resouces on other machines. Same user name, same password etc

Have you tried granting access to one of the shared
resources to 'everyone'. If this works then the issue is
security policy and resolution would be determined by OS
Pro or Home? Since you use dialup you could probably just
leave shares set to everyone and turn on firewall in ICS.

Thank you for your suggestions. It finally ended up
being the firewall in Symantics Internet Security that
was causing the problem. I had to set up the settings on
the firewall to allow the other computer.
