Network disconnection affects local client -server connection

Dear all...

I often have both the server and client parts of a certain
CRM software running on my W2K laptop. Sometimes at work I
have to leave my desk and take my laptop with me, which
then requires me to unplug my network cable. Now, if I
have the client window of that CRM program open when I
unplug the cable, I get an error message about a lost
connection.

This same happens if I (when working from home):
1. open a VPN connection to my company server through my
ADSL line
2. start the server part of the CRM software on my laptop
3. close the VPN connection (and leave the server part of
the software running)

Even though the server part of the software is running, I
will get an error message about "server not running or
invalid port number" when I try to connect to it.

On the other hand, if I start the server part BEFORE
opening the VPN connection (or while I am not directly
plugged to company LAN), the connection between the client
and the server will remain unaffected if the later is a
loss of connection.

I know that the client and server parts of this software
uses shared memory to communicate if both are running on
the same computer.

My question is: what is it that causes the error messages
when there is a loss of network connection? Is it that if
I DO HAVE a network connection when I start the server,
the server uses (some part of) the open connection to
communicate with the client? And could it be that if I DO
NOT HAVE a network connection when starting the server,
the server might set up itself to use shared memory to
communicate with the client?

Thanks in advance,

JJ
