Network connectivity problems

I have a 3 WinXP home network that connects to the internet via a wireless
router & a DSL modem. Until recently, it worked perfectly.

For no apparent reason, I now regularly loose internet connectivity,
sometimes after a short period of time, other times after an hour or so.

When I loose internet connectivity, I am also unable to access the network
and am unable to ping 192.168.0.1; I get a timed out message.

However, I am perfectly able to connect just my PC to the internet using the
DSL modem (i.e., without a router) and do not experience any problems with
connectivity.

Given the above, I assumed I had a router problem. The new router
experiences the same problems.

How about the Authentication.

If it is PPPOE DSL, directly on the Modem you need software to log on,
through the Router you need to disable the software and authenticate with
the Router (http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html).

If authentication is not the trouble the main difference between working
with a Router and a direct Modem connection is the IP assignment. Directly
on the modem you get an External Public IP, through the Router you get a
private IP. Check the Network (TCP/IP) setting and make sure that nothing
changed with the Obtain IP, DNS, IP lease time, etc.

Hi Alex ,

I agree with Jack and you can try his suggestion first. I only have some
thoughts:

1. You can connect only one computer to the router to see if there are any
problem happens.
2. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking to see if the problem persists.

The steps to boot into safe mode are as below:

Safe Mode loads a minimally protected-mode configuration, disabling Windows
device drivers and using the standard VGA display adapter.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose the Safe Mode with Network, and press Enter.

Note: Some third party applications and some hardware device cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
temporarily while in Safe Mode.

Thanks.
