Network connections never saved! Is this solvable?

I have three PCs networked through a broadband modem/router: - one windows
2000, one windows 98 (necessary for old film sanner to work!) and one windows
XP.

There has never been a problem with 98/2000, - they logon to the network,
connect with other PCs and connect to the Internet without a problem every
time.

With XP Professional, every time I start the machine I have to go through
the process of 'Set up a Home or Small Office Network' - even though it shows
the network connections as being present.

Therefore for the XP machine to connect to the internet and 'see' the other
computers, I have to go through this process every time, which is a real
pain. Why doesn't it save the settings, - is there a solution?

Cheers

Neil,

With a properly setup and working network, this is indeed not necessary. If you
can describe the makeup of your network (hardware and software), and what
symptoms you observe when you don't run the wizard each time you start the
computer, maybe we can diagnose your problem.

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, to start.
Start - Run - "cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window. Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, open
file c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig
listing.

Hi Chuck - thanks for responding,

The following are the specs and ipconfigs of all three PCs. The first two
(Win2000 & Win98 PCs) can communicate fine with no need to configure. The
third (WinXP Pro Laptop) needs me to run 'Set up a home or small office
network each time).
All three connected to speedtouch 510 modem/router.

Neil,

You still haven't told me what problem you're experiencing when you decide that
"The third (WinXP Pro Laptop) needs me to run 'Set up a home or small office
network each time)".

Try deleting the bridge on Th. If not the cause of your problem, with the
bridge removed, we should be able to see what it's bridging, and we can start
diagnosing the problem. Then post an updated IPConfig. Try and avoid rebooting
anything else, so that network settings on PC1, and PC2.lan, stay the same.

I have rebooted ( and completely closed down and restarted) the XP laptop
and the settings have held. (The problem before was that rhen the machine
restarted, it wouldn't recognise the network or get an Internet connection).

All of my machines are talking to each other now, and you are most
excellent! It's great for people like me with little or no understanding of
TCP/IP to get help from the experts,

Many Thanks!

Neil,

You're very welcome - glad to help. Thanks for updating us, and confirming that
the bridge was the problem.
