I am trying to connect one desktop PC to one laptop PC via Linksys Broadband router. The internet connections are fine. I cannot share files or printer. I have checked other postings and followed much of the advise w/o any success. I have common log-in names. I have entered the IP addresses in Zone Alarm's trusted zone. I can ping and traceroute successfully. In the view workgroup computers area of the laptop (wireless connection) I can view the laptop but not the desktop. From the desktop (hardwire connection) I cannot view either PC in the workgroup.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Einey,

What OS (name and version) is on each computer? Which computer is running Zone
Alarm?

Provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

From each computer, test shares visibility (use actual name / address of each
computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / error displayed in each test (8 tests total).

Cheers,
Chuck

Einey,

Chuck already gave you advice. If you want to know some more
details, you can have a look at

Chuck,
Running Windows XP Home and Zone Alarm (free version) on both.
What info do you need from the ipconfig?
I did the test shares visibility thing and on both PC's the results were the same:
I was able to connect and/or see "this computer" with IP and with name. I was able to see "other computer" with IP but with name I got the message "The network path was not found".
Lemme know if you need more info.

I'd bet your problem is Zone Alarm. You need to configure each for file
sharing, by identifying the other computer as present in the Local (Trusted)
zone. Firewall configurations are a very common cause of (network) browser, and
file sharing, problems.

And make sure the Guest account is enabled on both computers.

Chuck,
Guest is enabled on both, caught that from another posting in this newsgroup. As far as the firewall, I will take a closer look at my trusted zone settings. Thanks for the assistance.
