Anyone know what could cause my wireless connection on my laptop to drop
from 100mbps to 54mbps? I reformatted the main drive on my other computer,
which was a desktop, but I never unplugged the dsl modem. So I don't know
what could have caused it.

Are you sure that the laptop's wireless connection used do say 100
mbps? All standard wireless network adapters have lower rated speeds:
11 mbps for 802.11b, and 54 mbps for 802.11g. What does Device
Manager show for the wireless adapter's manufacturer and model?

Could you have been looking at a wired Ethernet connection? Wired
connections typically have a rated speed of 100 mbps.

BTW, rated speeds are basically meaningless, because actual data
transfers always occur at much less than rated speeds. For example,
an 802.11b adapter typically runs at less than 5 mbps.

Yes, I was looking at a a wired Ethernet connection. When I disconnected it
is when the 54 showed up.

A wired Ethernet connection should show 100 mbps. An 802.11g wireless
connection should show 54 mbps. Disconnecting one shouldn't affect
the other one.

Does that answer your question?

John,
Since you said that you reformatted and reinstalled your OS, recently. I am
wondering in your previous installed OS. Did you happen to upgrade the driver
for you Ethernet connection. Which boosted your Connection speed from 54 to 100.
You may need to go back to the PC and/or NIC card manufacturer's website, and
get the updated driver again.
