Network/cable modem problems

Bill

I had two comps. hooked up to a Linksys router and cable
modem. The desktop running W2K and the laptop running
Win98. The network worked perfectly for over a year. Out
of the blue, the desktop disappeared from the network and
I no longer could access the internet. I removed the comp.
from the network and attempted to access the internet with
just the modem and the NIC with no luck, DNS error (cannot
display page). LAN status shows 'connected' with packets
being sent but not received. I have uninstalled the TCP/IP
and reinstalled it. Ipconfig gives me 169.254.xxx.xxx like
it's been autoconfigured.Previous to the problem, IPCONFIG
would reveal the standard Linksys 192.168.1.1 address.
DHCP enabled, TCP/IP configured to obtain IP automatically
as well as DNS. All other settings for TCP/IP are set
correctly. IPCONFIG/release gives me "All adapters bound
to DHCP do not have DHCP addresses. The addresses were
automatically configured and cannot be released."
IPCONFIG/renew gives me "The following error occurred when
renewing adapter Local Area Connecction: DHCP server
unreachable."
Since this problem arose, I have purchased a new NIC and
cables, obtained a new modem from the ISP, formatted the
hardrive and reinstalled W2k, attempted hooking up the
modem via USB, router firmware upgrade, router resets.
I'm out of ideas.

In the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\
There is no DHCP shown after the VxD, what's up with that?

Also, in 'Add/Remove windows components' there is no DHCP
listed under the 'Details' listing for Network Services,
shouldn't there be?

My laptop works fine with the modem and it's NIC. I have
been through several technicians at tier 3 support through
my ISP, nobody can identify the problem. All they cared
about was the fact the laptop worked okay with the modem
therefore, not their problem. Although, I must compliment
them all on their attempts, they were pretty knowledgeable.
They also mentioned they were able to see my modem and NIC
through their network which indicates to me the hardware
is functioning properly. I've been without internet on my
desktop for over a week now, help!

From what is sounds like DHCP on the linksys is no longer functioning. You
might want to take one of the clients and statically configure the client to
an IP address, this way we can look at the dhcp server config on the router.

Configure the client to:
192.168.1.5
mask: 255.255.255.0

then reboot. When you come up goto a command prompt, and type:
ping 192.168.1.1

if you get 4 replies, that is probably our router. At that point, we know
the Ip address and we can look at the config. In IE goto:
http://192.168.1.1
and it should ask you for a username/password. Try putting admin in the
password line, and then hit ok. (I am doing this from memory, as I haven't
used a linksys in over a year), so check your docs if that doesn't work.

Then we just need to make sure DHCP is enabled etc. I have seen in the past
the routers loose their config, so you might want to reset it. If it was
working and you now can't get an IP Address and you are getting a 169.x then
you are autonetted, which means you can't find a DHCP Server, so I would
start here :)

I had a similar problem today - the switch part of the router was working,
but the internal NIC on it was dead - no amt of resets would allow me to
connect w/ the gui or ping it.

Stupid question but I'm having the same problem so I was
wondering if you reset the cable modem (turned
off..wait...turn back on)?

I had tried that several times.
