I don't want any network activity on my home network) to take place while
I'm capturing video. There is normally some periodic activity where it
looks to see what else is on the network, right? Is there a way to turn
this off temporatily (like logging off the network)? I have Windows XP
home, SP 2.

You can disable/enable the network connection in the Network Connections
box.

OK, in the "local connection status" there is a "disable" button. If I
disable there, will I be able to re-enable the network connection easily
(i.e. one click), or will it have to be set up again? If I disable it and
reboot, will it still be disabled or will it re-enable itself?

One click disables it, one click re-enables it. (Well, okay, two clicks)

Unless the drivers for your NIC are flaky it should disable and re-enable
without any problems. Once disabled it will stay disabled until you
re-enable it again, even a reboot will leave it disabled.

Great, thanks for that info.

Thanks, that worked perfectly. I've been trying to capture video. With the
networking on, it was droping about 1 frame per minute. With networking
temporarily disabled, I just captured 2 hours of video without any dropped
frames.
