I have a Word 2003 file on a network drive. Everyone has READ access to this
file, but 5 users have MODIFY access. The trouble is when someone who only
has READ access has the file open, a user with MODIFY access tries to go in
and edit the file, but it won't let them.

Why is this and is there a fix for this?

Thx,

-Tom

Word is not a multi-user application. Only one user at a time can open a
document from a specific location.

Hi Tom,

To add a bit to Graham's reply. If you're relying solely on the features of Word for document management you may be able to use the
setting in

Tools=>Options=>Save
[x] Make local copy of files stored on network or removable drives

to be able to open the document, but saving again may need to be a
'Save As' to new file name if the document is shown as locked (i.e. you can put your documents at risk). You may also want to look
at the abilities of
Tools=>Shared Workspace=>Tell me more=>Document updating.
