Netlogon Event 5774 errors

Guest

I’m getting several Netlogon Event 5774 errors on a Win 2000 server w/sp4
All the errors end in “DNS server unable to interpret format†the server is
not doing DNS but is a DHCP server. After searching the KB I found article
259277 and 888048 but did not solve the problem.
The actual error is:
Registration of the DNS record
'_ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site._sites.dc._msdcs.BPM.BatteryPark.com. 600 IN
SRV 0 100 389 BPMSERVER.BPM.BatteryPark.com.' failed with the following
error:
DNS server unable to interpret format.
event ID 5774
Net logon

I would appreciate any help

Thanks I'll look at the DNS

I ran DCDiag and received this error (I do not know where the IP
76.162.115.132 is coming from):

Testing server: Default-First-Site\BPMSERVER
Starting test: Connectivity
Although the Guid DNS name

resolved to the IP address (76.162.115.132), which could not b
pinged, the server name (BPMSERVER.BPM.BatteryPark.com) resolv
the IP address (192.168.0.1) and could be pinged. Check that
address is registered correctly with the DNS server.

Hello Terry,

If you have a DC running you MUST have at least one running DNS in your domain.
Please post also an ipconfig /all from your DC and from one workstation.

Hello Terry,

That's the reason that your DC, and it is really a DOMAIN CONTROLLER, can
not register itself. In your domain you must run your OWN DNS server.

For me your network should be setup like this:

Server:
Server/Domain controller with running DNS server (active directory integrated)
with one fixed ip, 192.168.0.1 and sm 255.255.255.0 dg 192.168.0.2 Pimary
DNS entry point to 192.168.0.1.

Open the DNS console and configure server properties, Tab Forwarder, fill
in an external DNS server entry, maybe your ISP. Then all address calls for
external traffic will go to your DNS server and the server forwards the traffic
to the Internet.

Workstation:
Like you did it with DHCP, but change the settings for DNS server to point
to your domain internal DNS 192.168.0.1 and not to the external ip addresses.

Hello Terry,

If you have a DC running you MUST have at least one running DNS in
your domain. Please post also an ipconfig /all from your DC and
from one workstation.

Best regards

KB 284963 did not help as there was proper DNS number in the
config.

The server also had dns running. I do not know the reason so I
stopped dns. THat seemed to stop the errors. The server is NOT a
dns server.

Only one server, a DC doing DHCP, 15 workstations. Connected to
Internet via DSL

:

Hello Terry,

Please give a little more info about your network. How many
servers with how many NIC's. How is your DNS configured on which
servers.

Best regards

Thanks I'll look at the DNS

I ran DCDiag and received this error (I do not know where the
IP 76.162.115.132 is coming from):

Testing server: Default-First-Site\BPMSERVER
Starting test: Connectivity
Although the Guid DNS name

resolved to the IP address (76.162.115.132), which could not b
pinged, the server name (BPMSERVER.BPM.BatteryPark.com) resolv
the IP address (192.168.0.1) and could be pinged. Check that
address is registered correctly with the DNS server.

Hello Terry,

Sounds that your DC is not pointing to a DNS server, look

I'm getting several Netlogon Event 5774 errors on a Win 2000
server
w/sp4
All the errors end in "DNS server unable to interpret format"
the
server is
not doing DNS but is a DHCP server. After searching the KB I
found
article
259277 and 888048 but did not solve the problem.
The actual error is:
Registration of the DNS record
'_ldap._tcp.Default-First-Site._sites.dc._msdcs.BPM.BatteryPa
rk
.c
om.
600 IN
SRV 0 100 389 BPMSERVER.BPM.BatteryPark.com.' failed with the
following
error:
DNS server unable to interpret format.
event ID 5774
Net logon
I would appreciate any help

Hello Terry,

Also one point i forgot, if you do not use the second NIC for teaming just
disbale it. You also can get problems in the domain with two configured NIC's.

If your domain is not configured for internet from your ISP and you are interested
in it, have a look here:
http://www.dyndns.com/

I'll give this a try thanks

Hello Terry,

That's the reason that your DC, and it is really a DOMAIN CONTROLLER,
can not register itself. In your domain you must run your OWN DNS
server.

For me your network should be setup like this:

Server:
Server/Domain controller with running DNS server (active directory
integrated)
with one fixed ip, 192.168.0.1 and sm 255.255.255.0 dg 192.168.0.2
Pimary
DNS entry point to 192.168.0.1.
Open the DNS console and configure server properties, Tab Forwarder,
fill in an external DNS server entry, maybe your ISP. Then all
address calls for external traffic will go to your DNS server and the
server forwards the traffic to the Internet.

Workstation:
Like you did it with DHCP, but change the settings for DNS server to
point
to your domain internal DNS 192.168.0.1 and not to the external ip
addresses.

We do not have a DNS server, we have one server a DC doing DHCP. All
the dns servers are external coming from our ISP (DSL)

the second IP is a second card.

:

Hello Terry,

Which of the DNS server is that one from YOUR domain? And for what
reason did you have 2 different ip addresses configured for the
server? All the DNS servers you have copnfigured, are they external
servers from the internet?

Best regards

I'm still getting the 5774 error. I though when I stopped DNS.exe
the error stopped but did not. Below is the error. Below that is
the ipconfig /all from server and workstation.
