NETGEAR SC101

SC101 NAS

This is an appauling piece of kit by today's standards.

It shows a complete lack of inadequate testing and quality control
from the manufacturer - IMO.

Devices these days should plug in and WORK.

I have a small network, consisting of a couple of PCs, a draytek
router, a printer / scanner, and the SAN device.

My laptop doesn't even see the device, and the other machine sees the
device but locks up whenever certain programs are run.

Sure - I can fiddle and poke around with it but why?!

Time is precious, and I didn't by this unit expecting to to buy into a
mini project just to get the thing working.

My impression of Netgear as a brand is most certainly tarnished.

I'm in two minds whether to flog it off rather than delve into the
forums and try do battle with it - as I suspect the retailer will give
me a hard time returning it.

I would also have two 250gb drives on my hands which I'd bought for
use with the unit.

I've read some people have no problems, but plenty of others (like me)
do. It's a shame because it's fantastic idea and cheap as chips
(perhaps there's the problem).

Contribution = word of warning to any potential customers of an SC101.

This unit has good reviews on many sites, this is unwarrented given
the number of people reporting serious problems with it. It may work
for you - it may require significant effort. More importantly make
sure you are 100% happy with it before entrusting any data to it that
is not backed up elsewhere.

Tnaks fro posting the info!

Personal experience with Netgear: They used to have excellent
customer support. It is abysmal now. We had a defect 24 port GbE
Switch from them (defect for the second time in 3 years) and it took 5
months of prodding to finally get it replaced under their 5 year
warranty. Last week we started using the replacement, only to find
that the one they sent was defective as well (has two dead ports).

Then there are the about 15 defect ''5 year warranty'' GbE cards, we
sent in about a year ago and never heard from again.

Some years ago I would have recommended Netgear as really good.
It seems the company has sufferd some kind of melt-down in the
mean time and merits now a definite "stay away".
