NetBIOS over TCP/IP on modem connection

Majoor

I'm using a dial-up connection to connect.

On this connection I would like to connect myself to some
drives, i.e. use 'net use ...'. However this results in
System Error 1231.

As far as I can figure out this error basically means that
I do not have the right protocols enabled on my connection.

On this specific connection I have enabled TCP/IP protocol
and 'Client for Microsoft networks'. So far, so good.
However "ipconfig /all" reveals that 'NetBIOS over tcpip'
is disabled which is what I consider to be the problem.
I have therefore tried to find a way to enable this so far
with no luck. The Internet is full of descriptions on how
to do this but they all apply to LAN connections, not to
modem or VPN connections. On my WINS tab I do *not* see
the checkboxes that apply to netbios over tcpip. They are
simply not there. If I try - just for testing - to
configure a new LAN connection I do then see these
checkboxes. However for modem and VPN connections I do not
see them. :-(

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

OS info: My pc is W2K. I believe the share I'm trying to
connect to is on a NT server.

To resolve the Problem:

1. Right-click My Computer and press Manage.

2. Expand Services and Applications.

3. Expand Services.

4. Double-click TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper.

5. Set Startup type to Automatic.

6. Press the Apply button.

7. Press the Start button.

8. Press OK.

NOTE: If the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is Disabled,
NetBT's clients, including the RDR, SRV, Netlogon, and
Messenger services could stop responding.

In response to John suggesting that the problem might be
that the "TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper" service is not running:

Thanks for suggestion. However this service is started
automatically on my pc ... as I guess is the default.

Also it would not explain why options regarding NetBT is
available on the WINS tab only for LAN connections and not
for modem and VPN connections.

There is no Enable/Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP option on the WINS tab in the
Advanced TCP/IP Settings dialog box of a dial-up or VPN connection as there
is on a standard network connection in W2k.
You should create VPN connection and bind either Microsoft Client or File
and Printer Sharing to it if you want to get NetBIOS.
OTOH, running NetBIOS across the Net is not so bright idea.
