.NET web applications on UNIX

This may seem like a wild one, but...

I have a potential client that wants us to develop a web
app on .NET and then port it over to UNIX.

My initial reaction is that the app would have to be
completely re-enginered for UNIX, but another developer I
spoke to said that they didn't think that was necessarily
the case.

Is there a relationship between .NET and UNIX that I'm
not aware of?

Not yet. There is currently a development under way to port the framework
to unix/linux...but, it is not MS sanctioned and is not likely to be done
anytime soon.

There is the MONO project at www.go-mono.com which is a .NET implementation
for LINUX + some others, and as far as I know there is a modmono at
www.apacheworld.org/modmono/ for Apache to host ASP.NET. How far along this
is I am not sure.
