.NET update problem

Hi,

I am running a WinXP Pro PC with SP 2 and all updates installed.

Yesterday I installed the optional .NET framework 2.0 update available from the
Microsoft Update service.

All seemed to proceed properly with no errors reported. However, this morning
Norton SystemWorks 2004 reported 9 registry errors and 10 program integrity
errors. NSW fixed the registry errors, probably by deleting the entries but
could not fix the integrity errors.

The integrity errors are created because the programs

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\AppLaunch.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_regiis.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ aspnet_state.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ aspnet_wp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\csc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\cvtres.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ilasm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\mscorsvw.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\ngen.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\vbc.exe

all cannot access the file msvcr80.dll.

I checked my drive for a copy of the missing dll file and found a copy in
C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1.......

This file was created on 23/9/05 at 7:29AM, is v8.0.50727.42 and is 612KB.

Can anyone please advise me if this is the latest version or not?

If it is the latest version of the dll can anyone advise what directory I should
put a copy of the file found? Would the directory
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\
be the correct directory to resolve the program integrity issue?

If it is not the current version how do I get hold of a current version?

Alternatively, do I need Framework.NET? Would it be simpler to just have
add/remove software remove .NET altogether? I am a simple home user and will
not be developing any programs to run on my PC or the net.

Even more confusion.

I checked the actual directory and found that there are 3 copies of msvcr80.dll
in the C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1....... directory. All report
the same version, creation date and time but are different sizes. They are
468KB, 536KB and 612KB.

Aaah! I wondered how 3 copies of the same named file could be in a directory
and re-checked. There aren't 3 copies of the SAME file in the directory but
there ARE 3 different files - msvcm80.dll, msvcp80.dll and msvcr80.dll.

Sorry about the confusion.
