Net Logon Service - Will not start

We are using an Active Directory structure in my company. Although the XP
Professional workstation in question will log into AD, it is not
authenticating on the domain. After doing some troubleshooting, it appears
that the Net Logon service may be the culprit. The Net Logon service is set
to automatic, however, it is not started. I attempted to start it manually
but it would not start and it generated an error message stating simply that
it could not start.

Any ideas on how to resolve this issue?

what does it say in the event logs?

Unfortunately, I am not in the office today and this machine belongs to an
end-user I am assisting. I won't be looking at it again until Monday. I only
know that there was a reference in the security event log that authentication
had failed.
