hey!

guys i have a barcode scanner Symbol MC 9060 running windows CE .net with
compact 1.1 framework installed on it.
My application is done in Visual studio 2003, winforms with vb.net 2003 and
uses webservices to connect to a remote webserver over the internet. Now the
clinet is upgrading from a symbol MC9060 to MC9090 which runs windows mobile
5.0 premium(non-WAN) or Phone eidtion(WAN) with compact framwork 2.0. so here
are couple questions
1. is compact framework 2.0 compatible with applications running on compact
1.1 : all i am doing in this application is some winforms, calling
webservices to send and receive the data, nothng really complex other then
calling symbol sdk api for triggerig the barcode scan

2. a bigger question : what is windows mobile 5.0 premium(non-WAN) or
Phone eidtion(WAN) operating system and is it compatible with windows CE .net
version that i was running on my barcode scaner. we had purchases the MC9060
scanner couples years back and seems the new scanners are comming with this
OS, i dont want to tell the client that it works but later findout that the
appilction is not running like it used to run on windows CE.

waiting for your answers.

1. Yes, they are compatible.

2. They are not the same operating system, but later versions. I have no
idea what Symbol means by Premium (non-WAN), as that's not a standard thing,
as far as I know, but it appears to me that it's Windows CE 5.0 and you can
choose a device that has a built-in phone (WAN), or not.

YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO TEST. There is nothing that you can say authoritatively
unless you test, so get the new device and make sure it works. I'd be
fairly confident, however, that it will work relatively well (Symbol's API
might have changed, as the display resolution might, etc., but other than
those things, it should work).

You should be asking Symbol, not us :) But if your previous device
was Win CE, and you're going to the MC9090 Windows Mobile device, one
difference is that your menus will display at the bottom instead of the
top. Also, it might come with CF 2.0 already installed (I can't
remember if I had to install it.)
