.NET 1.1 update fails

Help! I have tried to install the .NET 1.1 update using Windows update like
6 times and it goes through the whole process (download, install) seemingly
fine, then simply gives me a message that ".NET 1.1 Installation failed" or
something ambiguous like that.

Any help is appreciated.
