neither computer recognizes

I have an Aptiva with W98 connected directly to a P4PE with XP. It was quite a rigamarole to get them to recognize each other, and then I had to reinstall and reformat the latter's HD. Now I can't get either to recognize the other. I followed the instructions to put the XP disk in each computer and assigned each to the same workgroup but neither finds the other.
