Need to restart remote computer

R

Ryan

My remote computer (my work computer) locked up while I
was remotely accessing it, and I now need to shut it down
and restart it with my home computer. What do I type at
the following command prompt to accomplish this?

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>

I tried -s -r \\computer but I get nowhere. I substituted
the actual computer name for "computer."

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You can try the IP instead of name - but if it is truly locked up - get
ready to drive or get someone else to reboot it.

If you can actually still remote in (right...) - Press CTRL+ALT+END to
simulate CTRL+ALT+DEL on the remote computer and reboot it that way.

Just a thought-
Is your remote computer setup to standby/hibernate after a specific interval.
If this is the case you might have to disable that feature..

I believe the lockup is a bug in XP that does not happen to everyone.
Please read my thread "Remote Windows XP Freezes" and add to the thread. We
need to bring attention to this issue.

The issue Ryan is describing is a different issue than your freezing
problem... Take a look at the applications you have installed and see
which one may be causing a memory leak (hint: look at task manager).

Jeffrey,

Thanks for the suggestion.

I would sure like to disprove/prove the memory leak proposal. Can you
describe how I could determine whether or not the condition is a memory
leak?

For example, would adding physical memory make the condition less likely to
occur or make it occur less frequently?

Would changing physical memory have no effect?

Is there a conclusive way to determine if the problem is a memory leak?

I have looked at the list of processes in task manager and no one of them
has become very, very large. How do you recognize a memory leak?

Do memory leaks continue to get bigger and bigger or is there other
behavior?

Whenever you get the slowdown/freeze problem, open up task manager...
Look for applications that are using an exorbitant amount of memory..

Case in point - I use the Avant Browser (tabbed/popup blocker browser
based on IE). Normally it uses about 20MB of memory per task
manager.. However, for each hour I leave it open, it grabs another
2MB. After 4 days, it gets to around 116MB.. This eats up much of
the available RAM and significant slows down the computer. The
solution is to close the application.

It could be as simple as that on your end, but I suspect that it may
be the actual Terminal Services component that may be having this type
of leak. In this case, the only solution is to reboot.
