Need to reinstall ie5.5 over ie6.0

I have a user portal application which only works on
ie5.5 unfortunately someone loaded ie6.0 over it and now
my portal does not work i was told to reinstall ie5.5 but
no way can i acomplish this. 1) i cannot remove ie6.0
from add remove programs? and installinf ie5.5 tells me
that it found a newer version and aborts the install!

Does anyone have any tricks or am i missing something
obvious?

About two years ago I used the regedit described in this article to
reinstall IE. I know the article says for Windows XP, but I used it
successfully on Windows 2000. Seems like after setting "IsInstalled" to 0,
and after restart then IE/OE reverted back to IE5.0

Then just run IE5.5 setup again.
