Need to reformat and re-install XP

I might need to reformat my neighbour's HD, and re-install XP Home from CD.

I did this a few years ago with Windows 95 or 98. I seem to remember that I
needed a basic CD-ROM driver installed (was it ASUS?) in order to be able to
re-install XP from the CD. (Maybe I installed the CD driver from a bootable
floppy???)

Can anyone advise me how to ensure that I can install from a CD.

You don't need to do anything special like that with XP. All XP CD's are
bootable. Here are some instructions that may be helpful:

All legitimate WinXP installation CDs are bootable.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll
be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order
of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.
