need to re-instate default folder icons WINXP PRO SP2

Yesterday I lost all appropriate icons for programs on the desktop but not
for associated files, that is. doc, spreadsheet and graphics files kept
correct icons. Program icons were also lost on "start" menu. Icons for
programs in folders on the desktop were not effected. On the other hand, the
folder icons as usually shown in Windows Explorer and on the desktop were
also lost. They were all replaced by the generic icon. I have manually
respecified the relevant icons for all the programs but I am having problems
in correcting the folder icon/s within Windows Explorer and the icon/s for
the Nortons Protected Bin. I can get the "open" folder to operate but cannot
do the same for the "closed" folder when the generic default icon always
appears. I would like to get this operating properly. Similarly (or so it
appears), I can get the Norton Recycle Bin "empty" icon to show but not the
other icon used when there are files in the bin.
I have done all the restore defaults bits but cannot get over this problem.
I have no idea how all this happened. Any ideas please?

Did you try a system restore to just before this occurred? Can you pinpoint
what happened *before* this problem reared its head?

I dont know af any UI fixes for this but if you have your installation disk
handy then you can find the shell32.dll (probably SHELL32.DL_ on the cd) and
move it to
%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll.

You probably lost your icon cache which would reinstates itself after
restarting windows. Did you use icon packager/themeXP or some other skinning
application?

I tried system resore to a time before this problem and it made not the
slightest difference. There was no observable event which I can link to this
outcome. I was using the computer for software used many times before -
closed the window abd found myself lookint at a desktop where all program
related icons and folder icons had become the generic one>

Brandon,
Thanks for this but it did not cure the problem and, no, I have not used
icon packager/theme XP etc.

I have noticed that there is a registry edit for fixing the MS Recyle bin
icon which prompts for the empty/used state of the icons and I think I might
need something similar for the folders icon/s for the open/closed state e.g.
if "open" use open folder icon else use closed folder icon etc. Can anyone
comment on this? Appear to need something similar for Nortons Recycle bin
too.

There is gUI edit too (right click desktop> properties> desktop> customize)
for the recycle bin.

It would be helpful if you could describe some symptoms before this issue or
any reason you can think of which created this issue.

After many attempts to fix this problem and including reboots and having
given up 2 days ago, tonight Win XP Pro somehow decided to reassert itself
and all is back to normal. I have no idea how this problem occurred and now
I have no idea how it fixed itself. Ah Well!

I think I mentioned "You probably lost your icon cache which would reinstates
itself after restarting windows."

Windows has a habit of rebuilding this list. Glad all is well

Yes Brandon, you had that right but I never expected that it would take
slightly over four days to rebuild the list. Also it would have been handy
if there had been some way to give it a nudge to do the job much earlier. I
am much relieved.
Regards
Paul
