need to know how to unlock modifications on the pull down menu

Does anyone know how to unlock modifications on the pull down menu. It is
indicated that everytime I have to type more verbiage it keeps on saying
"This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked.

The verbiage that I am inputting is too lengthy and can't use abbreviations
on the choose item.

Appreciate your help. Thank you.

Either you have not activated Word or it is a trial version that has
expired.
