We just hooked up our 2nd computer, and installed our
current version of XP Pro just to see if hard drive and
motherboard were ok (it's been sitting for a few months).
This computer now has XP Pro, but since it belongs to our
new computer, we only have 1 registration key and will be
purchasing Home Ed. today (need to save some money, so
will put Home Ed. on this computer as it's a 2nd
computer). Can someone tell me what is the best way to do
this? Do I uninstall XP Pro completely as this is
considered a downgrade?

Thanks, Tiger

Hello
Yes Pro will need to be removed.
Boot from the XP Home cd and proceed, when to the point when it displays the
partitions then you will need to format(this will delete Pro) and install
Home on the partition the has Pro on it.

Thanks for your quick reply. My husband is wanting to
just purchase XP Pro for this computer as he doesn't want
to have to uninstall and repartion, etc... as you
explained.

Thanks, Tiger

Yes, that's your only choice. There's no way to downgrade
directly from Pro to Home.

Greetings --

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to
format the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path
or technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
