Need to buy Laser printer, Lexmark optra color 1200???

I need to purchase a laser printer for my freelance work. It must be
able to output on tabloid paper. I'll probably go with a black and
white only printer but would prefer color. Everything I've seen is way
out of my price range but my inkjet is way too slow. I need to output
text heavy, 70+ page documents. This printer would only be used in my
home office. I do not need a network ready machine.

Any advise would be appreciated.

I've noticed a lot of Lexmark optra color 1200 printers for sale on
ebay that are going really cheap. Does anyone know anything about
these printers? I'm skeptical of such a good deal but can not find any
bad press on them. It appears that the toner for these machines is
still sold and I could download a print driver (I'm running OS 10.2 on
G4 mac).

I don't have a fixed price in mind. I depends on the printer but I
don't want to pay over $1000.

Are you positive you need a laser? Why? If you think you need something
speedy with a low cost of ownership look at HP's Business InkJet range.
Separate printheads and ink cartridges so you only replace what you
need. Fast printspeed and cost-per-page that is lower than HP's colour
lasers.

Look at the HP Business InkJet 3000.

Thanks for taking the time to share all this info. I'll keep it in
mind as I shop around. The only reason why I don't want to bite the
bullet and pay a bunch of money for a laser printer is that I am just
getting started in my freelance work and I'm not exactly sure what my
future printing needs will be. It is a risk that I might need to take.
All printers are "network ready", since it's the print server that controls
network access to the printer, not the printer itself.

What I meant here is that I don't need a printer that is built for an
office full of people all sending jobs to the same printer at the same
time. One of my frustrations in shopping for a printer is that most
large format and/or color lasers are way more printer than I need. If
I could, I'd just buy one of the $200 b/w lasers that I've seen
advertised, but I HAVE to be able to print on tabloid.

Thanks again for your help. I need to make a decision quickly and I
don't want to resort to Kinkos.

I have found someone who has good conections for most things I need. PC
Replay is a company in Michigan that provided me with 2 excellent used laser
printers. I purchased an IBM NP 17 and a Lexmark Optra S 1650 from them.
Both are fully functional and the prices were more than fair. I did not see
any 11 x 17 printers there, but they may still be worth a try.

They have a small website, but it has their phone number on it.
