Need to be able to just click on the check box to check

I have a form that I am working with and need to check boxes by just clicking
on the check box. How do I make that the default mode instead of the not
checked box the default mode.
 
If these are check box form fields, the document must be protected for them
to work the way you describe.

The default setting of a form field check box is one of its property
options.
