Need some recomendations

George

Would like to put together another box. I've been out of the main stream for
3plus years and don't know
the components like I did or should.
I'm looking for a box that I can serf, do some word processing, a little
this and a little that. Was thinking about a
XP 2500+ as the cpu, or some other good recomendations.
Can you guys give me a bunch of opinions on a motherboard, ram, cpu, and
video card.

I have a few cases with good powe supplies, have a couple of old video cards
16meg nvida or tnt's.
If possible, I'd like to keep the investment around $250 or so. All opinions
are appreciated.

thanks,
George

A power supply is the one component that SHOULD be replaced every time you
build a new box. Unless you've got a power supply that is less than 2 years
old and 300W or better, don't chance trying to recycle it. For what you are
looking to do, the video cards might not work, either, unless they are PCI
format. The problem is AGP voltage. If those video cards are AGP 1X or 2X,
a modern motherboard most likely will not support them.

Get yourself an mainboard with built in video. Even the built in video will
be much better than an old 16MB era video card anyway. I'd look at
something like this, maybe: -Dave

An XP 2600+, Biostar M7NCG mobo, 512MB DDR400 will fit into your
budget. The mobo has onboard graphics that's way better than a TNT2.
It will be best to get a new PSU of at least 300W too. Just for
surfing and word processing, you can even have decent performance with
just 256MB RAM. If you decide to use 512MB, go for 2 sticks of 256MB
so that you can run them in dual-channel mode as that will give a
performance boost.
