I'm doing a conversion study for my company. We are currently using a
Linux-based HPC (High Performance Cluster) and would like to convert to
"Windows"-based. Current configuration of the Linux-based HPC has a master
node and 10 diskless slave nodes. The slave nodes network boot off of the
master node. My question is can I maintain the same hardware configuration
using Windows Server 2003 for the master node and Windows XP Embedded for the
slave nodes? I'm thinking of using the Windows Server 2003 for the front-end
(user interface) of the cluster, but if I can get off with using a "lower
priced" Windows that would be great. Any help or suggestions would be
greatly apprepiated.

Also, I have install the Trial version of Win XPE on my desktop and would
like to create a bootable Win XPE CD with TAP.exe, so I can run TAP on one of
the slave nodes to see what drivers I will need. Is there a write up which
explains how to do this?

Thanks for your help.

Ciao,
Rob.

Depending on the functionality you are looking for the "slave nodes" it does seem like XPe can suite.
The feature of XPe you should be looking at is called Remote Boot:

You can use WinPE disk (1st CD with XPe ToolKit).

KM,

Thanks for your suggestions and help. I'm using the downloaded version of
Windows Embedded XP, and I have looked in /program files/Windows
Embedded\Installer\DISK1\XPE directory and it only has in it SDILOAD.exe and
associated files. I have looked in other directorys and have not found
anything for Win PE. Any other clues on where I would find these files?

Ciao,
Rob.

Rob,

WinPE is not there in the downloaded package.
If you have MSDN subscription you can download WinPE ISO from Microsoft.

If not, you should over Eval CD of XPe. 1st CD of the package will be WinPE bootable.

I wish this was easier. :) I do have a MSDN Professional Subscription. I
went to my MSDN Subscriber Downloads and did a search for "Windows PE".
Figuring that would be easy. Nope. 1401 results. I have looked at a couple
of the pages and none of them even come close to what I'm looking for. Is
Microsoft trying to hide Windows PE? I look thru the list of all of the
Windows OS's and didn't see one entry for a Windows PE. Of course to make
matters even worst, I didn't see anything for Windows Embedded XP either.

I'm sure by now you're thinking I'm a complete loser. :) I'm hoping someone
from MS is reading this thread and will be nice enough to tell me were to
download Windows PE. Or, if you KM know where to download the silly thing.
Sorry to be such a bother. But, thanks again for your help.

Ciao,
Rob
