one program that's been deleted is still showing in the add remove programs,
how do i get rid of it?

According to the author of TweakUI, what XP is supposed to do is, if you
try such a Remove and it fails, then you should be offered a chance to
remove from the list. Which works sometimes (eg for Hotfixes) but by no
means always, especially if a remove was a partial failure. So you
either have to follow Ken's suggestion, or if it is simply a matter of
removing the entry, run regedit and delete the corresponding Key under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
