Need new set of CABS files

OK - we got hit with something that disabled our Norton Virus protection program and then apparently went into the CABS files. We can't install any programs and the computer is basically useless except for email and internet connection. I purchased a new Norton Internet Security program and downloaded the program but this program won't load either. Can we get a new set of CABS for XP anywhere???

Hi,

WinXP doesn't use cabinet (cab) files in the same sense that Win9x systems
did. Besides, the cabs were backups of system files - a virus in them would
have no effect on the system. Your WinXP system files exist in compressed
form in an I386 folder on the system hard drive or the WinXP CD (which
depends on how your system was built).

Have you tried booting the system to Safe mode yet by hitting F8 at boot?

The cab files are on your Windows XP CD.

Perform steps #1 thru #4 on this link to check for viruses and
spyware:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

Check for damaged/missing system files:
Start/Run
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Follow the prompts.
Have your Windows XP CD available.

See this link to help prevent this in the future:

Type

regsvr32 cabview

to repair the ability to view cabs if that is what you mean.

I am assuming that the CABS files are corrupted - that's why no programs will install.

It doesn't make sense what you are saying. If you have a problem state your problem not what you think is a solution.
