I just bought xp upgrade for my HP computer that runs on windows 2000. when I
put the disc in and click install upgrade, it came back telling that I cannot
do it, because I don't have the right path for an upgrade. ? what does that
mean? and do I just need to buy a new computer?

It sounds like it won't upgrade because the Win2K software installed on the
HP by, I'm assuming, HP when you bought it is not a valid previous version
install that allows for you to do an upgrade. (I'm guessing but it maybe you
can't upgrade an OEM version - from HP - with a retail upgrade package.) You
can return the upgrade version and buy the full, retail version and it
should upgrade just fine. (Also, ask HP if they know why.)

Which version of Windows XP is your upgrade? It sounds as if
you're trying to upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition. A system
running Windows 2000 can only be upgraded to Windows XP
Professional.
