Need help with partitionmagic 8.0 - It won't partiton my harddrive

Guest

I bought Windows Vista Ultimate Upgrade, and I plan on to partition my
harddrive so i can still use xp.

I bought partition magic 8.0 to partition my hdd.

1) First I loaded up Partition Magic
2) I clicked on"create new parition"
3) On the "Where to Create" menu, I highlighted the option "After C:
(Recommended)" only because it said it was recommended. The other options
available did not make sense, and had confusing names, so I didn't use them.
4)On the "Take space from which partitions" menu, I choose "C:" beacuse its
my only hdd.
5) Now I'm at the "Partition Properties" menu. I have a 232GB hdd, with
185GB free space. I decided that I want the new partition to be 130GB big, so
I can have a lot of space for vista. I named the "Label" vista. I made the
"create as" section as "Primary". I made the "File System type" as "NTFS
(Recommended)". And for the Drive letter, I choose "M:".
6) Now it says I'm finished. I then clicked on a "Apply" under "Operations
Pending". It says 1] Resize (C:) to 107944.6MB and 2] Create Vista (M:) on
Disk 1. It now reboots my computer.
7) My computer reboots without any problems, but after the Windows Loading
Screen (with the blue loading bar), it turns black. The Windows log on screen
does not appear. :(
8) Next I turned off my computer, and it loaded properly. The log on screen
appears! :)
9) I loaded up PartitionMagic to see if it really made a partition on my
hdd....and it didn't. The hdd is still the same as before!!! =[
10) I then tried to create a a new partition again, but the results are the
same!!! Can someone help?

Thank you!

Don't use PM! The filingsystem from Vista is different from XP's.
You can change your partitions with Diskmanagement, rightclick at
Computer, go to Manage and Diskmanagement, and right-click on
the partition you will change.

Hello

Disk Manager can create partitions as well using unallocated space. Just
right click the unallocated space, and select create. Then, choose which
options you want, and it will format your partition so you can use it.

You just can't make a partition. You have to shrink what you now have to
create unallocated space. You then create a new partition in the
unallocated.

BTW: Partition Magic 8.anything is NOT compatible with the new iteration of
the NTFS filing system used in Vista. Don't cause yourself future problems.

Yes. But if you create a partition with PM, and then go to install Vista in
that partition, you will get an error message saying that there are no
suitable partitions available. At that point you will have to
delete/create/partition where the original partition was created. May as
well just allow the Vista installer to do it from the git-go.

It is called shrink volume. After you shrink the volume, as much as you can,
you can create a new partition in the unallocated space that you just
created. Defrag the partition before you try to shrink it.

You can only shrink down to the last unmovable file that is on the drive. If
this file is toward the end of the drive you may not be able to shrink the
volume much at all.

Actually, PM works just fine under XP to set the hd up for Vista; I did it
last night. I used PM to shrink the XP partition (called "resize" in PM);
then created a new primary partition for Vista (formatted as NTFS), and it
worked just fine. However, I also installed BootMagic (comes with PM) because
I did not know that Vista included a multiboot option. But that should not
affect Mike's problem. I've used PM a lot over the years and it always has
worked fine. I'm not sure what Mike did wrong, but I wonder if it the machine
worked in DOS mode immediately after the PM reboot. If not, then nothing
happened; if so, then it gives progres reports throughout.

All I see is Open, Explore, Change Drive Letters and Paths, Properties, and

so this "volume shrink" option is not available in xp?

Is there another way I can partition my hard drive so i can still keep xp on
one partition, and install vista on another partition?

In this whole thread, I've not seen you state how your HD is currently
partitioned and formatted, but I'm inferring that you have one single HD
and that it has one partition that takes up the entire drive and that
there's one logical drive (or "volume"), C:, on that partition. If
that's correct, read on.
As I see it, you have about three options. For the first two to work,
you must have at least 25 GB of free space on C: currently.

1 -- get PM to work and shrink the current partition by at least 25GB.
Then, using either XP, create a 25 GB partition in that free space and
proceed with Vista installation. How to get PM to work is not a subject
for this forum, though.

2 -- image your XP installation with a product like Norton Ghost or
Acronis True Image (on DVDs). Verify the image and test it by restoring
some random noncritical files. Then use the boot CD from either of those
products to delete the current partition and create two partitions, one
for XP and one for Vista (the latter should be a minimum of 25GB). Then
use the boot CD to place the XP image back on the first partition,
reboot into XP, and proceed with the Vista install on the other
partition. (How to create a dual-boot is covered many times in this forum.)

3 -- purchase another HD, and install Vista on that. This would have
been your least expensive option in the first place, because you could
probably have bought either a PATA or SATA drive that was more than
adequate in size for Vista for less than the cost of Partition Magic 8.

"NTFS
(Recommended)". And for the Drive letter, I choose "M:".
6) Now it says I'm finished. I then clicked on a "Apply" under
"Operations
Pending". It says 1] Resize (C:) to 107944.6MB and 2] Create Vista
(M:) on
Disk 1. It now reboots my computer.
7) My computer reboots without any problems, but after the Windows
Loading
Screen (with the blue loading bar), it turns black. The Windows log
on screen
does not appear. :(
8) Next I turned off my computer, and it loaded properly. The log on
screen
appears! :)
9) I loaded up PartitionMagic to see if it really made a partition
on my
hdd....and it didn't. The hdd is still the same as before!!! =[
10) I then tried to create a a new partition again, but the results
are the
same!!! Can someone help?

Thank you!

Don't use PM! The filingsystem from Vista is different from XP's.
You can change your partitions with Diskmanagement, rightclick at
Computer, go to Manage and Diskmanagement, and right-click on
the partition you will change.
but i want to make a partition, not change one.

All through TechBeta and beyond I managed partitions with PM8, expanding,
contracting, combining, coupled with numerous installs of the various beta
builds of Vista, and finally Vista RTM Ultimate. The partition that RTM is
on was created some time back during the Beta, I just formatted it with the
Vista tools when I installed RTM. I never had a problem with it. I guess I
was lucky?
