Need help with monitor resolution please

I can not use a lower resolution than 1680x1050 on my new Dell
Precision 690, Dell monitor 2407WFP without having any image / icon,
etc become distorted, squashed down and this 1680x1050 is much too
small for my old eyes! At any of the other lower resolution choices an
8x12 in Photoshop actually measures 6x12 using a ruler. Does anyone
know why this may be happening or have any suggestions?

Thanks, Airpix

Unfortunately that is the nature of LCD monitors. They become rather
blurry when used below their native resolution which in your monitors
case is actually 1920x1200. I suggest you run it at 1920x1200 and then
increase the display DPI to compensate. To do this go into Control Panel
Appearance and Themes > Display > Settings > Advanced then under the
General tab select 120DPI. You will need to restart afterwards.

Why is it at any lower resolution the monitor distorts the image size?
A 12x8 image turns into a 12x6" size?
