need help with desktop

Bonnie

i recently had to reformat due to a bad motherboard.
i keep a shortcut of my drives on my desktop.
i used to be able to drag and drop things
from the desktop to the hard drives. now it does
a copy and there is the file still on the desktop.
i end up having to delete the extra file. can
i just drag and drop the file as an original??

another thing that i noticed is if i cut and paste.
there is no paste shown on the shortcuts to the
drives. i have to open the drive to paste. i used
to be able to right click on the drive and paste
the item. now paste doesn't show up anymore.

anyone have any ideas please?

thanks and hugs,
bonnie

To use it like that the disk would need to be formatted and you would need
some packet writing software. Otherwise you are using the built in XP
burning software and that's how it works. It copies everything to a folder
first. Then you get to burn it.

Bonnie:
I'm not really sure I understand your problem so forgive me if this response
is not relevant to your situation, OK?

1. When you use the "drag & drop" process to move or copy files to your
drive shortcuts on your Desktop, you hold down the right mouse button as you
drag the file (its icon) over to the drive's shortcut.

2. When you release that right mouse button a sub-menu will open and you
have the options of "Move here" or "Copy here". So you can select either
one, right?

3. Obviously if you select the "Move here" option the file (its icon) will
no longer appear on your Desktop. But if you choose the "Copy here" option
the file (its icon) will remain on your Desktop. Isn't that so?

This is normal behaivor in Windows when drag files from one drive to
another. When dragging files to another folder and the same hard drive the
Windows will move the file.

See if the shortcut file association fix will solve the Shortcut Problem.

anna,
when i right click on the folder,
i don't get a list showing up when
i move the file over the hard drive.
now if i just move the file somewhere
on the desktop, then yes i do get a menu.
the only way i can drag and drop is
if i open the short cut to the drives.

not sure why now.
thanks,
bonnie

i do believe that the shortcut now has
a paste that shows up.
