i have a form that needs to manage relationships thusly:

case1 |- food-item1 |- venue1
|- venue2
|- brand1
|- brand2
|- food-item2 |- venue1
|- venue2
|- brand1
|- brand2
etc....

what controls would be best to do this?

It appears you have either 3 or 4 entities. I am not sure, because you are
mixing venus and brands. Are they the same or different?
It could be:
1. Case
2. Food_items
3. Venu
4. Brand
Case is one to many to food_items
food_items is one to many to venues
venues is one to many to brands

or
1. Case
2. Food_items
3. Venu/Brand
Case is one to many to food_items
food_items is one to many to venues/brands

First, Forms do not manage relationships. You establish relationships
between tables and they are maintained by the database.
If you will be viewing all entities together, you will need a Main form
based on Cases and a subform for food_items and a subform to the food items
subform for ventues/brands.

The controls you use will depend on the type of data and how you want to
manipulate them.
