need help opening .wks files (works 2000 -> excel xp?)

i'm doing some computer work for a friend's father. he used microsof
works (winME) to save his spreadsheets, however, they are not displaye
properly in the office xp version of excel, they appear mostl
gibberish after excel tells me it cannot open the filel. i downloaded
converter that lets me convert works documents to word documents, an
that works great for the text files. i'm kinda stuck on th
spreadsheets though. can anyone help
 
I tried the free trial version but it didn't really work for my conversions. (from Works version 3? (1996 version) to Excel & Word/2003) There is some recognizable text, but all in all, it pretty much failed for my application. I have no idea how it will work on later versions of Works but if it it does, it's a real straight forward converter and would definitly be a time saver.
