I am trying to diagnose a problem on my HP nw8240 notebook, with WinXP
Pro SP2, that is preventing some of the services and startup programs
from starting up on bootup.

It would help if I understood what the various and assorted Services
and Startup options do. For example, what is Background Intelligent
Transfer Service and Network Location Awareness under Services, and
things like jusched and mcvsshld and tfswctrl under Startup?

Does there exist, anywhere, a list of all of the various options and
check boxes and what they mean, and perhaps some information about
interactions between them?

I have gone through the Microsoft website and haven't been able to
find anything that collects such information in one place.

Thanks in advance...

Some Utilities:
Services:
See: http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
or http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm

During Boot:
Try Autoruns from SysInternal:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html
This will show all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot. Might be of
some use in tracking the problem.

Windows Processes:
To find out more about Processes that are running try Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
Click/Expand the Svchost.exe and or the process that you are interest in.
Then highlight one of the processes listed under Svchost, right click and
from the options listed select: google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Use services.msc *NOT* msconfig.exe!

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK

Why can't I use msconfig to change my services?

[[The reason is because with msconfig and Hardware Profiles, you can disable
services that may be vital to boot your system. With the management console
(services.msc) you cannot. Also, msconfig, while unchecking the box, is
disabling the service.

The "Disable All" button also scares me. It should not even be there as no
reason exists to justify disabling "everything."]]

-----------

Open Services, scroll down to Background Intelligent Transfer Service, click
on it and read the description.

jusched is Sun Java Update Scheduler.
mcvsshld.exe is McAfee VirusScan.
tfswctrl.exe is CD burning support for writing directly to CDs from within
applications. Provided by Hewlett-Packard.

What is www.google.com
