Hello everyone.
I need to install win2000k server on my computer. problme i have is that ,
this is back up cd. and at some points my cd drive can't read the cd during
msdos portion of instalation. but , i can complitley install it , when i
have other os such as window 2000 pro, installed on my computer.
Yesterday, i lost my harddrive, and today i installed maxtor 30 gig
harddrive. for some reason , the only OS i can install is win98.. on FAT 32
..
i know i have to install win2k server on fat 16 first .. but since this is
big harddrive, i got tons of partition .. installing on fat 32 gives me
unrecognized or damged file system error during msdos portion of setup ..
Dose anyone please know how to install win2kserver over window 98 , or is
there any utitlity out there that can setup harddrive and format it into
NTFS ..
any help would be great
Thanks

To do a clean install, either boot the CD-Rom or boot the Windows 2000 setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Not possible to upgrade win9x to Windows 2000 server. No, installing Windows
2000 server to fat16 won't be necessary. If the install disk is damaged
you'll need to replace it.

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000 setup disks or
CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your
system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to
specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the
manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's controller in
drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Hmm... interesting. I have to wonder if that "drive controller
detection" might be the reason that I can not get a clean WINS install
on 2000 Advanced Server. I've loaded it on an old Dell Optiplex that I
think has a pIII-733 and i know has 256 megs of RAM with far more than
enough disk space.

I have tried nearly everything, including repairing the new install,
but still can't get WINS up. There is nothing in the folder where the
database should be, zero.
