Need Help Connecting two subnets

Miles Stevenson

This is probably simple, but I'm a bit new to networks so here it
goes...

I have set up a test environment with a Win2k server and a couple
client machines running winXP. the server is a Domain Controller on
the 10.0.0.X subnet and its ip is 10.0.0.2 This subnet is connected to
the other subnet with a router with LAN ip 10.0.0.1 and WAN ip
192.168.1.111.

What I need is the machines on my other subnet, 192.168.1.X to be able
to "see" the win2k server for file sharing. the 192.168.1.x machines
are just in a workgroup, not a domain whereas the 10.0.0.x are part of
the domain

so

|WAN 12.x.x.x |
|LAN 192.168.1.1| --|

_______|____________
|router |
|WAN 192.168.1.111 |--Win2k Server 10.0.0.2
|LAN 10.0.0.1 |-----client 10.0.0.X

I probably need to set up WINs or something, but i'm not sure

Please help and thanks in advance!

What is it, hardware routers? If they are:
Frankly, I would drop off the second router and just reconfigured W2k/Xp
network for the same 192.168.1 network. Or you can install second NIC into
the server if you prefer separate networks.
Back to the point, the main (Internet) router doesn't know anything about
the 10. network and it cannot send the packets originated from 192.168.1
network to the destinated 10. network through gateway 192.168.1.111., it
looks on its WAN port instead.
You can create lmhosts file for the workgroup computers with the appropriate
records like "192.168.1.111 servername #PRE" and put the server into DMZ for
the simplicity.
