I'm completely happy with my own AV software, but find I need a free AV
program for an acquaintance, who has been operating unprotected mode for
the past 1-2 yr.s. I've spent the better portion of the past 2 1/2 hr.s
searching Google for programs that I've seen mentioned here & elsewhere.
All I've come up with are AVG, which doesn't seem to want to send the
registration code to her hotmail acct. (She doesn't have a spam filter
in place & has added the addy to her address book)

Please help.

There's also Avast!.

Just wanted to chime in here with another suggestion: Norton AntiVirus costs
$49.95, in theory. But nobody pays full price, because NAV is heavily
discounted and rebated. I haven't paid a penny for NAV since 2000. If your
friend can afford to wait 8 weeks for a rebate, the software will be free. I
believe that McAfee VirusScan has the same deal. Either of these programs
will provide virus protection superior to AVG.

This is the time of year when the new 2005 versions of software come out.
You won't find discounts and rebates until early in 2005. On the other hand,
the 2004 versions are now widely available for nothing, after rebate. The
initial cash outlat is something like $9.95.
