I have searched all over the Internet and Usenet, but haven't come across this
identical problem. My PC is running XP Pro SP2, connected to the LAN port of a
D-Link DI-624 wireless router, which is turn is connected to a cable modem.
Simple file sharing is enabled. My son's PC is in his room, running XP Home SP2
and sharing the internet connection via a D-Link DWL-G520 wireless adapter.
Both PC's are in a workgroup, MSHOME. Windows firewall is disabled on both
PC's.
No problems with internet connection. My son's computer can access my shared
files and printer. He has a shared folder containing .mp3 files. I can share
some of these, but not others within the same folder. If I try to execute
these, WMP gives me the message: "cannot access the file". If I try to copy or
drag these file to my PC, I get the following error message: "Cannot copy
xxxx.mp3: Access is denied. Make sure that the disk is not full or
write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."
Interestingly, if I disable simple file sharing on the XP Pro PC and check the
properties of the inaccessible files on the XP Home PC, there is no security
tab. If I check the properties of the accessible files, there is a security
tab!
Remember, these files are all in the same shared folder. The only possible
factor I've been able to come up with is that all files on my son's PC that were
created after he started using a password to log on to Windows are inaccessible
to my PC, whereas all files created prior to his using a logon password are
accessible.
Is this a plausible explanation? Can anyone suggest a workaround?
