Need Basic Help RRAS & LinkSys Router = No Internet

John Smith

Hi guys;

I'm running a licensed version of Windows 2000 Adv Server.

What I'm trying to do is make it a VPN server so that I can get my nephew to
join my network over the Internet. I've done it before (long ago) but I did
not have a LinkSys router in place.

My Server is 192.168.1.100 and my router is 192.168.1.1
When I add RRAS and configure it I loose all Internet connectivity and can
no longer ping the router.

What simple thing am I doing wrong? Do I need a static route or something?

Hi John,

Can you check if filters are enabled when RRAS is configured on the server ?
If so, then you need to remove/modify inbound and outbound filters on the
respective interfaces.

Thanks,
Priya.

Hi Priya;

Thanks for the advice! I removed all filters from the Network card and it
now connects to the Internet again.
Does it matter that I removed all filters? Internet Security is handled by
the LinkSys router and it gets checked often.

Hi Marvin,

If you need more security, you can try removing only "outbound filters" and
keep all "inbound filters" in place.
And selectively you can modify ports to allow the type of traffic you need.
Eg: port 80 for HTTP etc.

Thanks,
Priya.
