I'm a bit clueless what the best strategy is for backing up my hard
disk?

Should I get an external hard drive?

Is it worth using a DVD writer?

What software is recommended?

How do Open Source software compare with ones you have to pay for?

Thanks.

It all depends on how much and how often you need to backup.

Maxtor makes some large capacity drives that come with software to backup
your pc.
Microsoft has a built in tool for backups as well, it's called ntbackup

If you want to make an image of your drive you could try something like
norton ghost or something similar.

Heck I'd just get a DVD burner and back up all your important data from time
to time...
The operating system itself can always be reinstalled if it ever came down
to that

It's better to put your data on DVD-R once a month or month a year
(depends on how ofter your data changes), and put it weekly or monthly
of DVD-RW, making a cycle so that you can get back to your old data.

Personally I recommend using external hard drive for a easy backup solution.
Just plug it in, and transfer the files.

DVDs may have trouble reading if their media gets scratched.
