I need to buy into .NET, primarily for VB development. I need to
upgrade my Visual Studio 97 and get a new computer(currently on
Windows 98). I will be doing personal development at home to learn the
new stuff. At work, we will migrate to .NET in a year or so, so I want
to learn it to keep my job.

Q. What version of Visual Studio should I get?

Q. Should I get a PC with Windows XP or Vista and which version?

thanks for any advice.

2005. You can get the Express version for free.

XP Pro if you decide on XP. As for Vista - not really sure, you will
probably want Ultimate, but you'll need to see which version can run
IIS if you want to do web development. I haven't jumped on that
bandwagon yet :)

Tom,

One nice thing about the free Visual Web Developer 2005 Express is that it
has an integrated web server so you can get comfortable with the product
without messing with IIS or needing an OS that comes with IIS.

I will likely get visual basic 2005 Express and use SQL server Express
that is included. I learned that if I run on an XP it reuires Pro, and
it supports only 32 bit proccesors.

Q. For Vista, which version is the minimum that will work with SQL
server and VB express?

Q. Any recommendations for AMD processor?

VS2005 with Service Pack 1
Make sure you get MSDN as well. After VB "Proper" you'll be floundering
trying to find your way around all the Framework classes without it.

I'd stick with XP Pro until more people have
undermined/figured out/overcome/mastered (delete as applicable)
Vista's (IMHO) appalling new [in]security model.

And for your new PC, bolt in as /much/ memory and disk space as you can
afford. XP will run /better/. Vista will run; probably. :)
