Need a "Replace All" Editor

F

FYIS.org/estore

I have been using Word to edit a text file for its 'Replace All'
function, since Notepad does not appear to have that editing
functionality.
However, I have recently discovered that it is replacing certain
characters (") with special characters (could be an eol symbol).

Any other text editing programs out there with a Find & Replace All
function that will not substitute its own character set for special
character, and take what it is presented?

Metapad is a nice replacement for Notepad and offers a good search &
replace, two user definable fonts, unlimited document size, etc. in a
program little larger than Notepad.

PFE (URLs below) offers "replace all" and more. No longer developed,
but still among the best IMHO. Not a resource hog.

PFE allows you to switch between the search&replace dialog and
document window(s) without first closing the search&replace dialog.
This is nice if you want to perform multiple different replaces by
adjusting your search or replace strings "on the fly".

PFE lets you search and replace just about anything. A special
notation allows you to search for characters like "end of line" that
you can't type. From the HELP:

<copy>
To represent characters that you can't type in the Edit Find and Edit
Replace dialogs, and in the search string specified in the EditFind()
DDE command, use this notation:

\f represents a Form Feed character
\t represents a TAB character
\n represents the end of a line
\\ represents a single '\' character

To represent an arbitrary character code, use the notation "\xnn",
where "nn" represents two hexadecimal digits. The null value "\x00"
is not permitted.
</copy>

The notation uses the "\" character, so you must "escape" it if you
want to perform a search/replace on the "\" character it self - thus
"\\".
