Speech rec simply doesn't work on my T20 Thinkpad. I get the above
message. There is a KB article 838659 that addresses it as a bug, and
says a hotfix is available, but apparently I have to sign up to
Passport or pay $$$ to get it. Is there any way to get this hotfix
file without sending MS any more personal info than they already must
have?
Thx, D

Microsoft doesn't ask for personal information other than the
particulars of your PC configuration to determine if the fix
is applicable. If you are are asked your name, just use an alias,
such as "John Doe".

In reference to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 838659:

Speech engines do not work and you receive an error message
when you open Speech Control Panel
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];838659

The only way to obtain the patch is to contact Microsoft as outlined in the article.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services
to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone
numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS

[ In the U.S. Call 1-425-635-3311 ]

NOTE: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may
be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update
will resolve your problem. The typical support costs will apply to additional support
questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

These tentative hotfixes are only allowed out to people who have the
problem: they may yet be further modified before being generally
released. If you call MS Support and say immediately that you want the
fix for this reference because you have the specific problem, you will
not be charged

Frustrating! Hotfix did absolutely nothing. I have tried
uninstalling and reinstalling alternative user input from Office 2003,
I have tried installing the speech SDK, doesn't work. I installed the
copy of Via Voice 8.1 that came with my Ultraport Microphone, and in
does work, though not very well. I uninstalled it because I thought
XP has its own speech recognition, and I don't want to fill up my HD
with redundant software.

Any ideas?

TIA

I found SAPI5.inf, and reinstalled from the original CD. Problem
solved. Whew!
